Video Tutorial #3: Downloading your video onto the computer (Gulp!)

Click here to watch this week's episode!

Most of us fell victim to the ways of the digital camera when it first came out.  We learned how to use all the new bells and whistles and shot amazing pictures.  The problem was (and for some remains) we leave the pictures on our camera!  Don't let this happen to you with the FlipTM.  It's relatively easy to download your video on either a PC or a MAC.  Here's how.

Whether you're a PC or a MAC user you first have to "flip" out the USB plug from the FlipTM camera.  Simply plug it into your laptop (or hardrive) and wait for the icon to pop up on your screen.  Once it does click on it and wait for it to load the software (this may take a minute or two depending on how fast your computer is)  Once it is loaded, your videos should appear.

The first thing you want to do is save your videos.  Don't skip this step or won't be able to edit later.  Hit the "save videos" green button and all of your video clips will appear.  You can randomly select which ones you want to save or you can hit "select all". If you have several videos the numbers at the bottom of the screen will help you scroll through the pages of video clips.  You will have three options to save...to your computer, to disc or to e-mail.  To do all three you have to do them separately.  (We'll get into the specifics of all of those in a later episode)   To save to your computer, simply select the videos you want (just by clicking on them individually or by hitting "select all") and then hit the green save button in the upper right hand side of the screen under save to computer.

Here's a great tip for naming your videos if you plan on editing later.  Don't take the name the computer gives you because it will likely be a number and letter code that makes no sense to you as a user.  Instead, change the name of the video to exactly what you shot.  For example, "living room wide shot"..."living room tight shot".  This will make editing your video MUCH simpler in the long run.

Next video lesson:  When should I use the FlipTM Camera?

Tara~Hi! Thanks for these tips. I've been using my Flip Video and even recorded my son's taekwondo class yesterday. I recorded less than four minutes...when I tried to upload it to YouTube so that I could insert it into my Blog, it never uploaded after hours...any ideas on what's up? Also, I notice that A|R has a Mixpo thingy here that I can use to upload but it's $30 per month...is it worth it? Thanks so much for your help!

Tara, every strong and informative series. The video you show in the interview was all shot with the flip camera? If so the quality is amazing.

Frank-  The actual tutorials and just about all of the video examples we show were shot using professional grade cameras for our clients, not the Flip.  In the previous episode (number two) we showed the difference between the Flip video and the professional grade...the difference was drastic to say the least.  You can check it out on my blog...reeldwellingstv.activerain.com    Thanks for watching!

La Shawn- We have heard numerous complaints about YouTube uploads.  Bottom line, it takes A LONG time for your video to upload and an even LONGER time if you have an older computer or dial up.  Plus, the larger your video file (the longer your video is) the longer it will take to upload.  And yes, sometimes, it just flat out doesn't work.  The problem, however, is not on your part, it is YouTube.  Everyone and their brother is now uploading videos from across the globe so the server is likely at capacity.  To lessen your frustration factor you may want to get into a habit of uploading your video at night before you go to bed.  If someone else has figured out a faster way on YouTube please let me know and share the knowledge!

As for Mixpo, I honestly don't know enough about it to give a credible opinion.  I did find this blog from Bob Stewart with Active Rain who talked a little bit about its capabilities. http://activerain.com/blogsview/447994/Get-a-head-start  I suggest you contact him and also ask other real estate professionals for their advice.  Perhaps someone has used it and can chime in?

John-  We are working on your answer... you actually stumped us a little on this one!  When you post your blog are you using the embed code or just putting a link in the post?

Yo! Techno Tara!!!  Look at you giving out technology advice... and I knew you back when.  ;^ )

This series rocks.  You and TJ are doing a great job.

There is an uploader that you can get from YouTube to deal with larger sizes.  You really shouldn't need it for Flip videos, but it might make it go faster.

While logged into YouTube, go here.

You never thought you would see the day, did you, Lane?!  Thanks for the advice...I knew someone would come through...no surprise it's you :-)

Thanks again!

I don't know if it is the answer... just a thought.

You may be right...I'm waiting to hear from John to see what he says.  I am really curious to find out what the answer may be to his problem.  Love learning new stuff!!!

Ok Lashawn- you need to go to Brad Andersohn's blog and search for his comparisons of different video servers... I use one called Viddler to upload mine to for free.  There is also ones like welcome mat, google video and the list goes on.  Mixpo is not just an uploader, but also allows you to edit the videos directly in the program.  All of the videos that Brad makes are done with Mixpo now I believe.  It has a few cool features that some of the other software doesn't.  Personally, I have not been too impressed with the youtube uploader and have experienced difficulties in the past.

After thinking for a minute I searched and found the post.  Go Here. Hope this answers the question!

Lashawn- There are many ways to skin a cat. In this case we prefer WellcomeMat. Christian and the boys over there are incredible. They have a greaat server that allows you to post and link link your video in a very simple mannor. Our material is hosted there and they are constantly working to improve what you are able to accomplish.

They are about to make some really cool advancements that you will benefit from in many ways. Can't tell you now or I would have to kill you. Check them out here...

TJ- I may have to go check out wellcomemat again.

I second Wellcome Mat.  Great people, great service.

Posted by Tara Jones about 12 years ago

You might also consider TubeMogul.  They will upload to several different places... you get a log-in and they will distribute it.  You still have to upload to WellcomeMat (which I also recommend), but you can knock out everything else pretty easily.  I use both of those... and have requested to TubeMogul to pick up WellcomeMat.
