How to use YouTube properly

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT post your videos to YouTube among the general mass of videos.  Why?  Your video will reside in the vortex that is YouTube meaning it will be paired with videos that you may not want to be associated with. Each time a video is done playing on YouTube another "video suggestion" pops up for the viewer to choose.  These videos were chosen based on key words in the title of the last video.

Here's how this can hurt your and your business.  If you have a great video that you posted on downtown Atlanta and after it ends your competitor's video pops up because he, too, specializes in downtown Atlanta, you just did yourself a disservice and helped your competition to boot.  You can also have "unsavery" or distasteful videos pop up after yours if you're not careful, potentially offending clients when all you were trying to do was help.  How does that happen?  Well take one of our clients for example...Bottom Line Home.  After his video was done playing on YouTube various videos pertaining to “bottoms” popped up!  UGH!! Now think about people who embed the YouTube video player on their site and have these problems.  They are now contaminating their own personal site with YouTube issues all for the sake of SEO results.  And here’s the real unfortunate part.  Once you place your videos on YouTube, they’re there.

So here's how to avoid these massive problems and still get all the  Google juice from posting your video(s) on YouTube.  Simply create your own channel.  This is a free service on YouTube and takes all of about 15 minutes. You can customize the colors, format, etc. to really make it a design that matches your current branding.  The great news is that once your video is done playing, if you have another one posted, that will be the suggested video to play.  No more imposition of YouTube junk.  Just the quality and professionalism you want to portray :-)

Take a look at our new, revamped channel on YouTube:

I thought about putting a video on youtube. I didn't even think about all of the crap that can happen after you upload! I'm glad I checked out your blog! Thanks for posting.

Tara, thanks for the tidbit of information.  I always thought that the intuitiveness of YouTube was a bit far reaching.  Now, problem solved, with your help!

Wow thanks for this information, I had no idea you could create your own channel.  I still have to learn how to post a video on Youtube but when I do I will be sure to use your advice.  I would not want and "unwanted" video to be displayed after mine.

I've got to checl to see if I set up a channel.  I do have a few videos on YouTube...  Of course they get WAY more views from being on my sites than they get from being on YT.

Just set up your site NOT to show associated videos other than yours. We have 360 videos uploaded and it works super. The folks with luxury properties that say they would not be caught dead on youtube are missing lots of eyeball scans. It's neat to see 4000 or 5000 on a property or local commmunity video...they work. There are slew of other video hosts too for different niches, just like social media outlets thanks to web 2.0.

Nancy-  Thank you so much :-)  And best of luck with your channel..it will be great!  *And be sure to post it here on Active Rain so people can subscribe.

Ray- Few people think about that kind of stuff until it happens to them and then there's no way to reverse it!  I'm glad you found this helpful.

Kevin-  So glad you can implement this tool effectively now.  It really is powerful when used correctly.

Fernando- If you have a number of videos your channel will be a hit and you'll be able to better maintain your SEO results by having them grouped together with similar metatags :-)

Jim- Good for you!  Keep us posted on how it works.

Bill- YouTube is ridiculously user friendly (hence their explosion into main stream society) but if you need any help you know where to find me :-)

Gene- Same as I told Bill, I'm here if you need any help as you embark on the video front.  Good luck..it really helps all the way around in your business.

Lane- That's because your sites average about as many hits as YouTube!!!

Sheldon- Thanks so much and it was great speaking to you this week as well.  I hope you are doing fantastic :-)

Andrew- GREAT ADVICE!!!  Thank you so much for sharing and I am so glad to hear that you are having amazing results on YouTube "the right way"!

Tara thanks for some very helpful info re YouTube. I'm so wanting to add video to Robin's site and on the web but there's sooooo much to learn re doing/using video properly. First I have to bring the website out of the dark ages of Front Page and into compliant mark up using Expression Web. Learning CSS is a major learning curve in itself but I can't see adding video to a very outdated, non-compliant Front Page site only to later incorporate it into the updated site. Ah, soooo much I want to learn and sooooo little time. Again, thanks and your channel looks great. Sue of Robin and Sue

Tara,

Can you take a moment to share with me how you post a video from you tube to AR?  I was attempting to do it last night, but just couldn't figure it out! Thanks so much!

Sue-  I wanted to invite you to check out my recent blog in which we have released free video to post on your site.  It's as easy as cutting and pasting the code :-)  Here is the link.

Chris- You can add video to your blog by copying the embed code of the video and then going into the HTML portion of the blog (located at the top) and pasting the code.  Change the "Visibility" function to draft and hit "Post Blog Entry".  When you come back into your blog to edit you should see the embeded video.  From there, you can make all the corrections/additions in the WYSIWYG ("What you see is what you get") portion to finalize and post public.  Hope that helps!

Great Tip Tara! I did not understand the advantage in setting up a channel on YouTube. I can see it's well worth doing. Thanks

how exactly do you do this?  I have a channel and tons of videos but when I embed one, eg on my blog, after it is over it suggests vids that are not necessarily mine.

for an example see:  Richard Scrushy Lake Home Auction - Videos and Pics

And are y'all going to RE Tech South this year?

Thanks,
